Nitrous Oxide/Laughing Gas
We offer nitrous oxide or “laughing gas” at each visit to help with dental nervousness or anxiety. With nitrous use, we monitor the dosage to give you the right amount needed for optimal relaxation and safety. Nitrous oxide clears out of your system quickly so once treatment is completed, you are safe to drive home and continue with your routine.
Oral Anxiolytics
That’s why we give our patients the option of using oral anxiolytics (relaxation medications). We utilize several different types of medication, one of which will be selected based on your health, age, dental treatment plan, and desired effect. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) can be administered in addition to the oral anxiolytic if indicated. You will take the medication approximately one hour prior to dental treatment. Most patients who select this option report feeling very relaxed and do not remember a lot of what happens during their appointment. The level of sedation reached is almost always higher than that reached with nitrous oxide alone.
If you are prescribed an oral anxiolytic, you will need a trusted friend or family member to drive you to and from your dental appointments, as well as someone to stay with you until the effects of the anxiolytic have worn off.
